# Why drains keep clogging (and what actually helps)

Most clogs come from a short list of everyday things. If you know what they are and how they build up, you can keep most drains moving without harsh chemicals.

## Key takeaways

- Grease turns solid as it cools in the pipe, and hot water only moves it further down.
- Hair and soap are the usual bathroom culprits, and a strainer catches most of it.
- Only toilet paper belongs in the toilet, including wipes labeled flushable.
- Chemical drain cleaners can damage older pipes and create a hazard for whoever opens the line next.

## Kitchen sinks: grease and food

The kitchen drain takes the most abuse. Fats, oils and grease go down warm and liquid, then cool and stick to the pipe walls a few feet past the sink. Each layer catches food particles, and over months the opening narrows until water barely moves.

Running hot water or adding dish soap does not fix it. It pushes the grease further along, often into a colder section of pipe under the basement floor where it hardens again.

What helps:

- Pour cooled grease into a can or jar and throw it away.
- Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing.
- Scrape plates into the trash.
- Keep coffee grounds, eggshells, rice, pasta and fibrous peels out of the disposal. They settle in low spots and pack down.

## Bathroom drains: hair, soap and hard water

In tubs, showers and bathroom sinks, hair is the main problem. It wraps around the stopper and binds with soap residue into a mat that catches more hair every day.

The Miami Valley's hard water makes this worse. Minerals combine with soap to form scum and scale that build up in traps and on the inside of older pipes. In homes with original cast iron drains, the rough, corroded interior gives that buildup more to grab onto.

What helps:

- Use a strainer over tub and shower drains and empty it often.
- Pull and clean sink stoppers every few weeks.
- If scale is a constant issue throughout the house, it may be worth asking about [water treatment](/services/water-treatment/) options.

## Toilets and wipes

Toilet clogs usually come from too much paper at once or from things that should not be flushed. Wipes are the biggest offender. Even the ones labeled flushable do not break apart the way toilet paper does. They may clear the toilet, then snag further down the line on a rough joint or a root, where they collect grease and paper until the main line backs up.

Paper towels, cotton swabs, dental floss, feminine products and cat litter cause the same kind of trouble. The safest rule is toilet paper only.

## Why chemical drain cleaners cause trouble

Store-bought chemical drain cleaners work by generating heat or dissolving organic material. They can burn through a small hair clog, but they have real downsides:

- **They can damage pipes.** The heat and caustic chemicals are hard on older metal drains, worn joints and some plastic pipe.
- **They often do not reach the actual clog.** If the blockage is further down, the chemical sits in the trap or pipe.
- **They are a safety hazard.** If the drain stays blocked, you now have a pipe full of caustic liquid. Plunging can splash it onto your skin or into your eyes, and a plumber who opens the line has to work around it.
- **They do not touch grease or roots in a main line.**

A plunger, a hand auger or removing and cleaning the trap are safer first steps for a single slow fixture.

## Habits that keep drains running

A few routines prevent most clogs:

- Keep grease, wipes and food scraps out of drains.
- Use strainers in every tub, shower and kitchen sink.
- Run plenty of water after using the disposal.
- Pay attention to early warnings. Slow draining, gurgling or odors usually show up well before a full blockage.

Call a plumber when more than one fixture is slow, when a clog keeps coming back, or when water backs up through a basement floor drain. Those signs point to the main line, where a professional [drain cleaning](/services/drain-cleaning/) and possibly a camera inspection are the right tools. The [drains and sewer guide](/guides/drains-and-sewer-guide/) covers main line and sewer problems in more detail.

## Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to plunge a drain after using a chemical cleaner?

No. Plunging can splash the chemical back out of the drain and onto your skin or into your eyes. If a chemical cleaner did not clear the drain, tell the plumber what you used before they start work.

Does pouring boiling water down the drain clear grease?

It may soften grease for a moment, but the grease cools and hardens again further down the line. Boiling water can also stress some plastic pipe and fittings. Keeping grease out of the drain is the only reliable fix.

Why does my sink keep clogging in the same spot?

A clog that returns often means buildup further down the line, a pipe with too little slope, or a rough section of old pipe that catches debris. A plumber can clear the line fully and, if needed, run a camera to see what is causing it.
