A sump pump usually fails at the worst time. You might find a wet basement floor after a spring storm, a pump that runs nonstop, or one that hums but never moves water. A stuck float switch, a bad check valve, or a blocked discharge line can each cause it. So can a motor that has worn out. ## Common questions

How often should a sump pump be checked?

Test it before the wet spring season and again in the fall. Pour a bucket of water into the pit and make sure the pump turns on and shuts off. If it doesn't, or if it grinds or rattles, call us for a maintenance visit.

Can you come out the same day if my basement is taking on water?

Same-day appointments are available Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM, so call as early in the day as you can.

Should I repair or replace my sump pump?

It depends on the pump's age and what failed. A stuck float or a bad check valve is often a simple repair, but a burned-out motor usually means a new pump. We'll explain both options when both make sense.
